Heroes Season 2 Finale-Powerless

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy
At last, the long wait is over (at least for those guys, like me, who don't have NBC). The season finale has just been seen by yours truly, and i must give a standing ovation to the cast and crew that has made the finale truly unforgettable. Okay, its not as explosive as the finale of season 1 (that was uber cool!) but the Heroes team managed to pull their resources and end wonderfully despite the ongoing Writer's Strike (damn you!!!!).

Well Powerless (cool reference to an X-men storyline) was really about the Company, not the Shanti Virus. How they managed to create something that 12 founders believe could cleanse the world of all its impurities, after Adam Monroe convinced Arthur, Kaito and the others that the world is worth saving. Actually, its a nice concept. However, the ending seemed to be rushed (again because of the Writer's Strike, damn you!!). Nevertheless, here are some of the things i want to tell you guys.

First, i hated the deaths of Older Petrelli and Nikki (this isn't final though. From the story, Nikki was inside the building during the explosion and Nathan was shot to death by an unknown assassin). I mean, killing someone just to make the series good isn't really nice. Lets just hope that Claire's blood can heal them.

Second, i admired what Hiro and Noah did. Hiro, trapped Adam in a coffin (cool idea) where he would be locked for all of eternity, unless some idiot decide to unearth Kaito Nakamura. Too bad Peter didn't read Adam's mind to know his evil plan (one bummer *sigh*). And its nice to have Noah back. i guess he will be teaming up with the Haitian again since Suresh will be paired with Elle. The Company's policy of "one of them, one of us" is also really very exciting.

Third, the reunion is so cool. Petrelli brothers are really cool. Its just so bad that Nathan had to be shot before he could tell the world that he could fly. Kinda makes me think of my twin.

Fourth, there were characters that i think could've done something amazing in this season but was forced to be stopped because of the stupid Writer's Strike (okay, im not against it, but dang! my heroes!). Maya and Alejandro could've made it big, also with Monica and Damon. And how about Victoria Pratt? and especially to the Irish girl Caitlin. what's gonna happen to them? (except Pratt and Alejandro since we know they're dead)

So that's it. Overall rating is 4 and a half stars (4 on this site). Without a doubt, HEROES is really amazing. There were flaws but still, it rocked my evening. I'm so excited with their volume three: villains. SYLAR is back! Lets see what pandora box means next season.

Jojo was a man.....

Btw, I've been an avid follower of Heroes from the day the first episode aired on RPN-9...for the second season, I was only able to catch the first episode (sad to say ) but I could find the opportunity to catch up (or maybe skip it if what I've been hearing is correct).

However, the planned foreshortening of the season should prove beneficial if only for creative recharging.

OT (but not necessarily OT)...finally got hold of a copy of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, the anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki's Shonen Jump manga.  As the Season 1 pilot posits, Hiro Nakamura is a big fan of that manga series (he even posted in his blog under the name Kujo Jotaro)

As I am going through the series (currently on the 8th "adventure"), I was struck by the canny similarities between Heroes and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.   There's the multicultural mix of protagonists (the father-son team of Joseph Joestar and Kujo Jotaro from Japan, Polnareff from France and Abdul from Egypt to name a few), a Sylar-esque figure in the form of Dio Brando, a shadowy organization overseeing the existence of super-powered beings (Speedwagon Foundation=Primatech Paper???), and - yes - the superpowers themselves (hereby named "Stands", one of a number of Stephen King references in JBA).  Some of the specific stands even have Heroes parallels - Hiro's time manipulation ability owes as much to Kujo and Dio, while J. Geil's ability to manifest its stand through mirrors is oh sooo Niki/Jessica.

It also helps that Araki-san must be a big VH1 fan, since the majority of the characters of JBA (particularly the Stand users) have names borrowed from '80s and '90s musical acts (Paula Abdul, REO Speedwagon, Dio, Iggy Pop, Vanilla Ice - there is much more if one gets hold of the manga); by Part 6 of the manga, the Stand users are also named after fashion designers/labels (Guess, Alexander McQueen, Kenzo).  The names of the Stands themselves are derived from the Tarot deck as well as the Egyptian pantheon; by Part 4 of the manga, the Stands get to be named after musicians/bands/albums (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Just the same, both anime and manga are worth checking out (I first learned about the manga when I used to hang around the old Honya convenience store in Makati - they had a near-complete run of the series, which gave me the opportunity to savor Araki-san's quite OTT visual style).  The characters' over-exaggerated musculature is reminiscent somewhat of Fist of the North Star and Baki the Grappler; Araki's eye for precision is evident in the way he gets to evoke settings like India and Eqypt as well as - in the manga - Regency England and  1930's Italy.

Btw...you could get a copy of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure from cscentrl.com

Heroes Philippines activities for November

After the biggest activity of the year that is called “New Worlds 5”, your moderators are planning to have two small activities for the group this month. (Or 1 this month and the other next month.)

One: the Heroes season 2 thon! I think we should do the thon on a monthly basis. I prefer the last weekend (November 24 or 25). Please reply with the date you want the thon to be held so that I can reserve our tambayan (read: Fandom Café).

Two: the mini-EB and Casting Call! We will meet in a place where we can discuss future activities of the group and convince other members to cosplay a character from Heroes just like we did at the con. We will let you decide on what we will do and when we will do it

1. play bowling
2. just have coffee in a café
3. go to star city
4. dine out

Please take note, attend in costume. If you don’t have a costume… just be Sylar’s random victim. Please reply with the date and the activity you want.

So… what do you think, guys! We need to decide on this guys so that we can make the arrangement and the "official" announcement.

'Heroes' Season 2 Finale Coming in December?

Friday, November 02, 2007
Sendhil Ramamurthy and Dana DavisIn the past few weeks, you may have read something about a possible writers' strike in Hollywood and thought it was some meaningless threat that would have no real impact the TV you love. Oh, how wrong you are.

One day after NBC announced it was doing away with the Heroes: Origins spin-off miniseries, now comes word that, in preparation for the now inevitable strike, the Heroes team is retooling the end of its December 3 episode so that it works not just as the end to the second chapter, titled “Generations,” but also as an end to the second season.
That's right, if the strike moves forward and doesn't end quickly, the second season of Heroes may be over a whole lot faster than you expected. Scheduled to be episode 11, if the December 3 episode does in fact serve as the season finale, it would mean the Heroes year is more than halfway over. This presents several scenarios and should elicit different reactions.

On the one hand, Heroes season 2 has been largely panned by fans, and perhaps a quick conclusion followed by plenty of downtime would allow the writers to reflect on exactly why viewers aren't as excited this time around and adjust accordingly. On the other hand, the Heroes team may have been building to an exciting couple episodes, and that momentum may be broken by a shortened season.

However, Heroes fans needn't be too disturbed by the news. The writers had already mapped out two shortened arcs, or chapters, both to air this season. So in a way, this episode was supposed to be the end of a chapter anyway, so there will be some closure. Unfortunately, it's rather clear that “Generations” was about the Group of 12, the series of eight paintings and the impending battle with the Nightmare Man, while it's likely that chapter 3 would deal with the Big Bad Biohazard Peter sees in the future. Setting that date of June 14, 2008 may have been a bit premature if the writers' strike sticks and that story isn't actually told until next fall.

I will choose to be an optimist. Heck, look at Lost. It's been away for so long, and yet the ABC drama is proving the old adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe, with a nine month wait until season 3, the same thing will happen with Heroes. All we'll need to get us through that time is a huge, game-changing cliffhanger a la the flash forwards.

Heroes' second season to END in December!

Heroes' second season may be coming to a close a lot sooner than expected due to the forthcoming apocalypse, also known in some circles as the damn writers' strike.

Sources confirm that the show is going back and shooting an alternate ending to the Dec. 3 episode that, if used, would allow the episode to function as a season finale in the event of a strike. Originally, the episode was only supposed to serve as the conclusion of the current "Generations" arc. Should an 11th-hour agreement be reached and a strike averted (fingers crossed!), the alt ending would likely be scrapped.

In related news, the reality of this whole thing is only now hitting me. And I'm not happy.

Sad news for Heroes: Origins

I got this news via Heroes TV LJ community:
False start for NBC's 'Heroes: Origins'
by Andrew Wallenstein

Nov 1, 2007
Fears of a writers strike may have already contributed to a decision NBC made Wednesday to pull the highly anticipated spinoff miniseries of its hit "Heroes" from a midseason launch.

NBC declined comment, but "Heroes: Origins" is not going to get its six-episode run, which was expected to start as early as late April. While the network hasn't officially canceled the spinoff, producers of the series have been given no indication of when it might get a spot on the schedule.

Geek Magazine interviews Masi Oka

Geek Magazine's interview with Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura of Heroes) is now available online. Here is an excerpt:
“A geek is someone who is passionate about something,” points out the man whose portrayal of Hiro Nakamura has, in many ways, been the audience’s entry point to NBC’s superhero drama, Heroes. “It can be about anything. It can be about musicals. It can be about computers. It can be about our show. And you can be passionate about more than one thing. I would rather be passionate about something than apathetic about everything. To be Geek is to be human.”
Link to part 1 and part 2 of the interview.

Heroes Season 2 Premiers at Greenbelt 3

We’ve all seen the battle at the Kirby  Plaza during the season 1 finale. Now, our beloved heroes are back for season 2!

I was given 2 invites for this season’s premier held at the Cinema 5 of Greenbelt 3 last October 18, 2007. Being a hardcore fan that I am, I scrolled through my mobile phone’s contact numbers exuberantly to see who I can tag along. I saw my cousin’s name and realized he hasn’t started watching season 2 – best candidate, so I called him.

That’s so cool! But you’ve seen it already. Why would you still go?” he said.

I’m the biggest fan. I ran a fan group, remember? I don’t mind watching it again.” I replied. The next thing I knew he was picking me from home.

We arrived 20 minutes early. At the queue area, I saw organizers from Crime/Suspense, most were in Heroes shirt and there were a few panels around Cinema 5. I saw familiar panels like Claire’s and Peter’s (from Season 1) but the best thing was seeing panels for season 2 – 2  panels for the main cast, 1 for Kristen Bell and another 1 for David Anders (yes, in his Takezo Kensei costume). Such an eye-candy.

A few girls went over to Peter’s panel for picture-taking. Some of them even went as far as caressing Peter’s chest and smiling coyly in front of the camera. Hats off to them for being game.

Then, there were tarp banners for the sponsors and presentors and a long table that displayed back issues of Fudge magazines and pastries from BreadTalk – given as freebies for the guests.

The program started with a deejay from Monster Radio RX 93.1 hosting the game. Heroes-related questions were given and 10 winners got their own goody bag which had Heroes comics (not the 9th Wonder comic book, too bad) and the Vote Petrelli button pins. I intentionally did not join the contest, even if the questions were really, really easy because I prefer the autographed comic books! (I am so joining the Auction thing at the con, hehe)

Shortly after, the airing of season 2 pilot episode began. It kinda felt weird that moment and the weirdness went away when I heard the familiar narration along with the familiar faces on the screen. New faces were shown too, which added more excitement. The only part I didn’t like was how they showed it. The screen was pixilated. It was not the typical ones that you see in movies/films.

There were a few reactions from the audience (giggles and so) and when I turned around to see, my face almost froze. Lots of empty seats, about 50 of them. If I had a way, I could’ve dragged my members, it could’ve been a much successful event with most of the geeks cheering and simply just enjoying their favorite TV show.

It was a joy to see that my favorite characters have made it to the second season. I am particularly interested in Peter’s new life, Hiro’s journey in feudal Japan and Molly’s struggles with the nightmare man. Who is he?! (Okay, I’m pretending I haven’t watched episode 4 haha)

On our way out, we were greeted with another round of free Fudge Magazines, Heroes posters and umbrella courtesy of RPN9 / Pare! I also got a Vote Petrelli button pin for winning the “look-under-your-seats-lucky-ones-will-get-a-gift” thing. Freebies are always good and fun.

My verdict for the whole event: 3 out of 5 stars.

Heroes Philippines in New Worlds 5: We need volunteers!

Since Heroes doesn't involve hardcore cosplaying, we still need to come up with something distinctive with an interesting look for the members.

So far, we have Iana as Claire Bennet (with the cheerleader costume, of course), and I remember Alec promising he'd come in as Matt Parkman (hopefully he gets to find a police uniform soon!) Any takers for Hiro, HRG, Nathan and Peter? :)

We also need volunteers for the group "Sylar's Victims." Here's the idea:
  • Costume not necessary
  • We'll put fake blood lines across the forehead
  • All you need to do is walk around the activity center. If a fan recognizes you and asks you, you may of course extend a mile by telling him about your power and your gruesome encounter with Sylar. Haha. Up to you ;)

We also encourage you to join the contests. It'll be fun plus the prizes from Crime/Suspense are awesome.

Volunteers may reply here or you can email me through acidburn(dot)shey(at)gmail(dot)com

I know some of you are not part of the mailing list yet. Please join the ML: heroesphil@yahoogroups.com

Volume 2: Meet the New Heroes

(l-r):Dana Davis, Kristen Bell, David Anders, Dania Ramirez, Shalim Ortiz

======

Meet the new Heroes:

MONICA DAWSON
(Dana Davis)
Monica enters in episode 4 from New Orleans with an unspecified ability. She works to support her brother and grandmother (Star Trek’s Uhura, Nichelle Nichols) and develops a bond with her cousin Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey). ”She’s a good girl with a good heart,” says Davis (The Nine). ”Her life’s been taken from her, and she’s looking for a way out.”

ELLE
(Kristen Bell)
Described by Tim Kring as ”a little unstable” and ”a cautionary tale of what our Heroes could become,” Elle has ties to the Petrelli clan, H.R.G., and Claire. ”Elle has trouble knowing right from wrong. She holds a piece of Claire’s future,” says Bell, who admits, ”Heroes was the watercooler discussion at Veronica Mars.”

KENSEI
(David Anders)
Yes, the pasty-skinned Anders is playing Hiro’s childhood idol, who according to history books is supposed to be a noble hero. Except, in reality, ”he is a drunk Englishman and a hired hitman, essentially,” says Anders (Alias). But he does have powers, and when they’re revealed, Kring says, ”they’ll have major ramifications for the entire Heroes world.”

MAYA HERRERA
(Dania Ramirez)
In true ”Wonder Twin powers — activate!” fashion, the abilities possessed by twins Maya and Alejandro work in tandem. Ramirez (X-Men: The Last Stand) was actually unfamiliar with Heroes when she auditioned, but got hooked when she did her homework. ”I couldn’t leave my house. My dog was looking at me like ‘Please walk me.”’

ALEJANDRO HERRERA
(Shalim Ortiz)
As we meet Alejandro and Maya, they’re on the run from the law, forced to flee the Dominican Republic because of the destructive nature of their powers. ”We are harming a lot of people with whatever it is that goes on with us,’‘ says Ortiz. ”We are on our way to the U.S. so we can get answers. Our story starts with a punch.”

Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia BUSTED!

This video really cracked me up with the captions but at the same time, made me happy. Hayden and Milo get cozy, comfy and intimate at the Duran Duran concert staged at Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles, an official after-party of the Emmy Awards. They seem quite in love as they touch and take pictures of themselves in the midst of the crowd, and towards the end of the sequence Hayden spots our tiny video camera recording it all across the crowded hall. Blessings of Venus be with you, Hayden and Milo!

Hayden/Milo Paris Tour Pictures

Yesterday my favorite heroes went in the street in Paris-Monparnasse where they were applauded by their french fans, just before the signing session. Useless to say that it was a very successful event after Munich!

And for all of us Paire fans, I share with you the traditional HALO PICS ... and let's say that it's truly a shame that Tim doesn't acknowledge his mistake!!
Say "Hello, Halo chemistry!" All over each other... I LIKE IT!!! *squeeeee*
